On the Pingen hiking trail in Kall
The excursion follows the Pingenwanderpfad, which was created in 1995 by the Kall branch of the Eifelverein with scientific support from the Geological Institute of the RWTH Aachen. On the circular route, we will pass a Roman quarry from the 2nd/3rd century AD, which can be found in layers of Upper Buntsandstein. The sands were deposited in a river landscape around 245 million years ago. The trail continues into the area of the former mining fields of Stahlberg on Kindshardt and Concordia on Loshardt. Brown ironstone was intensively mined here from the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century. Around 2,000 mining pits, known as "Pingen", have been identified. For centuries, the deposits provided the basis for a flourishing iron smelting industry in the Urft and Oleftal valleys.
