Archäologie vor Ort: Der Grüne Pütz - Kopf der Wassergewinnung
May 24, 2025
Nettersheim
The Roman builders did not make use of the groundwater at the Grüner Pütz. Instead, they built an 80-metre-long seepage gallery at the foot of the slope of the mountain rising up to the side. A water-permeable channel was created on the mountain side, through which the water from the limestone mountains could seep in. An almost square inspection shaft was built at the end of the seepage gallery. The structure was not covered, but was closed off at the top by a square of half-barrel walls. Gorgon heads had been carved into both front corners, which were probably intended to keep evil away from this water catchment. The water flowed through a widened pipe cross-section in order to calm down and purify itself. The canal towards Cologne was connected to it.
Prof. Dr. Klaus Grewe will give a talk on the history of the Roman water pipeline on site.
