EifelSpur Heideheimat

Kall

The focal point of the 10 km EifelSpur "Heideheimat" hike is the Steinfeld monastery and the heathland around Krekel and Sistig in the municipality of Kall. Here you hike through the northern Eifel and explore the Kuttenbachtal nature reserve on your own.

The starting point of the circular trail is the idyllic Steinfeld Monastery in Urft-Steinfeld. Enter through the wide-open wrought-iron gate of the monastery gate. Don't miss out on a visit to the monastery. The monastery basilica, one of the most important medieval monuments in the Rhineland, was built in the 12th century as one of the earliest vaulted churches in Germany. The monastery itself dates back to the 10th century. The late Gothic vault paintings by the painter Hubert von Aachen and a rich Baroque interior have been preserved. The König organ from 1727 and the mortal remains of St. Herman Josef are world-famous. It is one of the best-preserved monastic monuments in the Rhineland. In the monastery you can feel the deceleration. The beautiful, centuries-old garden contains a labyrinth and is a place for contemplation and relaxation. Here you can switch off and forget the hectic pace of everyday life.

On the way from the monastery to the heath, you cross the Kuttenbachtal nature reserve. Follow the winding paths in the direction of Kuttenbach to the Sistig-Krekeler Heide. Enjoy the fabulous nature. Here you are in a natural paradise that is unparalleled in the country. Rare plants, fragrant forest meadows and untouched nature await you. The greenish wood hyacinth, wood cranesbill, spotted orchid and green hollow tongue are just some of the rare plants that grow and thrive on the Krekeler Heide. The Sistig-Krekel Heath is an Eldorado for plants and animals. Here you can discover the full diversity of nature: crossflowers, cuckooflowers and rattle pots vie for the favor of bees, butterflies and bumblebees fluttering and buzzing through the air. You will stroll past colorful meadows, species-rich mat-grass meadows with arnica and small fens, over which the absorbent cotton flakes of the narrow-leaved cotton grass sway back and forth. In late summer, some of the meadows turn blue when the lung gentian opens its blue funnel-shaped flowers.

The Krekeler Heide with its wealth of flora and fauna is particularly worth a visit in spring. On the way back, you walk past the Kuttenbach stream to Diefenbach, where you follow the path back to Steinfeld Monastery.
