BördeExpress
Euskirchen
The Bördebahn is a single-track (formerly double-track), non-electrified branch line (formerly main line) in the Rhineland, which branches off westwards from the Eifelbahn in Euskirchen and runs via Zülpich to Düren. Today it is mainly important for freight traffic. The Eifel-Bördebahn RB 28 is the nucleus of the later Eifelbahn from (Düren via Euskirchen) to Mechernich, Kall on to Gerolstein and Trier.
In contrast to the Oleftalbahn, the Bördebahn is designed as a double-track main line between the district towns of Düren and Euskirchen. The line was closed to passenger traffic in 1983. Especially in this day and age of high volumes of private transport and high operating costs for a car, the strategic importance as a gap closure in the rail network of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine becomes clear.
New: The Eifel-Bördebahn has been reactivated by the Rurtalbahn and runs every hour between Euskirchen and Düren. You can see the timetable on the IG Rurtalbahn e.V. homepage.
